Overall, the Department's main function is to assist the Director of the Economic and Community Development Department in the planning of the city. This includes assisting the Planning Commission, the Board of Zoning Appeals, private developers, and the public with any project or plan they have for utilizing a piece of property. The Department ensures that the Comprehensive Plan is being implemented. The Department also serves a wide variety of functions pertaining to the management of the City. Any new construction, whether residential, commercial, or industrial, must first be reviewed by the staff to ensure that the use of the property and bulk of any structures meet all of the Zoning Ordinance guidelines. Reviewing residential, commercial and industrial subdivisions is also a large part of the Departments responsibilities. The Department must ensure that all new development meet the guidelines set forth in the City Code. Other specific duties the Department handles include zone changes and lane abandonment requests, variances, special uses, zoning compliance, home occupation review, and map creation. |
