The Wheeling – Ohio County 911 Center went into operation on August 11, 1987 and upgraded to an Enhanced 911 Center on April 11, 1988. The Department’s operating budget is funded in part by a 911 tariff rate of $1.97 per landline, a pro-rata wireless tariff of $3.00, and the City’s General Fund. Although the Department is operated by the City of Wheeling, a 911 Advisory Board was created for providing recommendations for the operation of the Center.

The Advisory Board consists of the following representatives: 911 Director, City Manager, County Administrator, Regional EMS Director, Postal Service Representative, City’s Fire Chief, City’s Police Chief, Chief Deputy, State Police, Voluntary Fire Chief, and OEM Director

The 911 Communications Center’s dispatch service area covers approximately 106 square miles and 19 combined miles of Interstate I-70 and I-470. Within this square mile area, there is an approximate
population of 50,871 people.
